Jakarta - Indonesia has been hit by an increase in cooking oil price and scarcity across the archipelago for the past few months, prompting President Joko Widodo and other officials to step in.

Recently, the prices of palm oil fresh fruit bunches (FFB) have been at an all-time high – With the increase in oil palm fresh fruit prices, plantations are at risk of losing output whether it is due to pilferage, uncollected crops, or lack of data that is useful for daily monitoring.

A team of scientists led by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has produced and extracted plant-based oils from a type of common microalgae. Since the oils produced from the microalgae are edible and have superior properties as those found in palm oil, the newly discovered method would serve as a healthier and greener alternative to palm oil.

The government cut the price of per litre palm oil by Tk3 on Tuesday.
