New model to save forests from palm oil
10/02/2009 (Carbon Positive) - A new sustainable development model could allow palm oil producers to continue to expand without destroying valuable forests, its proponents, the World Resources Institute, claims. The US-based environmental research and advocacy group says its POTICO model could act as a circuit-breaker in an industry at the centre of one of the biggest environmental problems of the current time.

Malaysia to help Pakistan in edible oil refining
09/02/2009 (Pakwatan.com), Karachi - The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) has agreed to extend technical co-operation to Pakistan's edible oil refiners during next five years to help the 'infant' industry maximise its yield by 94 percent. In this regard, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Pakistan Edible Oil Refiners Association (PEORA) and MPOB at a local hotel on Saturday.

Greenpeace protests biofuel plans
05/02/2009 (Helsinki Times) - A proposal by Helsinki City Transport (HKL) and the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council (YTV) to power all buses and rubbish trucks in the capital region by fuel made from palm oil has drawn criticism from environmental organisation Greenpeace. For several weeks trials have been carried out in Lahti with hybrid buses which use a mixture of electricity and diesel. HKL is planning to test the buses in Helsinki over the following months, with a view to putting them into service as early as the end of this year.
