PETALING JAYA: The European Union (EU) may have unfairly grouped Malaysia with countries that clear forests for oil palm cultivation, according to an economist.

Jakarta. The Indonesian Palm Oil Association, or Gapki, urged the government to revive its now defunct transmigration program, first implemented under former President Suharto, to empower rural farmers and enrich palm oil producing regions.

The oil palm plantations are holding out many advantages for farmers because of the lack of major pest problems and non-requirement of intensive labour and bulk water even as the final crop yields are expected to bring high returns. However, the crop has not expanded its footprint in rural areas to the desired extent.
