Copra, palm kernel imports seen hit by new EU rule

Thursday, May 29, 2003, AMSTERDAM - New stricter European Union rules onanimal feed are due to virtually halt Asian shipments to Europe of copraproducts and might also curb imports of palm kernel expellers, industrysources said on Tuesday.

CHINA, P.R. - OILS & FATS DOMESTIC DEMAND

23 Sept, 2003 (Oil World Flash) - The official import data for Augustconfirm very strong domestic demand. Imports were higher than expected forsoybeans and, in particular, again for palm oil. Soybean imports wereboosted to 2.45 Mn T and this brought the total for Oct/Aug 2002/ 03 to arecord 18.4 Mn T or more than double the quantity imported the yearbefore. A slowing-down is now expected for September. But Chinese soybeanpurchases have picked up and we should see increasing US exports to Chinafrom October onward. The latest US export sales report showed newcropsoybean export commitments to China at 1.8 Mn T as of Sept 11, up from1.69 Mn T a year ago. Last weekâ€™s Chinese purchases were not yet includedin this figure.

World Production Growth Nearly Doubling to 5.6 Mn

19 Sept, 2003 (OIL WORLD FLASH) - Accelerating production growth is mainlyexpected in seed oils whereas a slowdown is in prospect for palm oil.Strong world demand growth of 4.2 Mn T is forecast for next season,against a relatively low increase of 3.1 Mn T in 2002/03. A major burdenfor 2003/04 are the low carry-in stocks of only 12.6 Mn T, down from 13.8Mn T a year ago.
