Economy in Brief: Astra Agro’s CPO Production Grows By 11.2%
18/10/2012 (Jakarta Post) - Plantation company PT Astra Agro Lestari (AALI), part of diversified conglomerate PT Astra International (ASII), saw its crude palm oil (CPO) production grow by 11.2 percent to 1.03 million tons in the third quarter of this year from the same period last year. In September alone, the publicly listed company reported that its CPO production reached the highest level so far this year with 147,890 tons.

Almost a Quarter of Filipino Palm Oil Workers Are Children
17/10/2012 (Triple Pundit) - Child labor is all too common on palm oil plantations in the Philippines, as a study by the Manila-based Center for Trade Union and Human Rights (CTUHR) found. The study looked at palm oil plantations in the Caraga region of the island of Mindanao in the Philippines and found that 24 percent of workers in the industry are children between five and 17 years old. Children working on the palm oil plantations work up to 12 hours a day, and some jobs they perform are as tough as hauling a 15 to 50 kilogram fruit bunch and loading it on a truck.
