Nation’s Future Depends on Science, Tech
09/11/2011 (THISDAYlive) - Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Senator Robert Boroffice, has said there was nothing the country could do successfully without science and technology.
Boroffice, who made this observation while speaking with newsmen in Abuja yesterday, said the economy of a country like Malaysia was moving forward because much attention was given to science and technology.
He explained that 90 per cent of all appliances used in the country were from science and technology, adding that it was therefore very important to pay much attention to it for the country to meet the Vision 20:2020 target.
He said: “We are not applying science and technology in the country. Let me tell you, 90 per cent of what we are using are products of science and technology, talking about wrist watches, shoes, chairs, telephone, house-hold items are all products of science and technology.
“There is nothing other developed countries are doing that we cannot do if we give much attention to science and technology in the country.
“People keep talking about Malaysia, that the country took palm kernel from Nigeria and they are doing well; I said yes because the country applied science and technology, that is why the economy of Malaysia is moving forward by now. Not only palm oil, they are the largest exporter of vegetable oil in the world right now. They have over 150 products from palm tree, including anti-biotic.”
He also said the country would not realise the millennium development goal without science and technology, adding that the government should inject more money in science and technology so it could move forward economically.
