25/05/2011 (Bernama) -- Felda Palm Industries Sdn Bhd is aiming to get an average of 10 factories annually, belonging to Felda Global Group, equipped with biogas traps in five years time.

Senior Project Engineer, Felda Palm Industries, Sallehhuddin Mohd Noordin said the cost for the first phase of building each of the biogas plants is expected to amount to RM3 million to RM4 million.

"Felda Global Group started on its first biogas plant in Serting Hilir, Negeri Sembilan in 2005 and today, a total of 10 of our factories have the equipment," he told reporters during a media tour of Felda's palm oil mills here recently.

He said the purpose of the power plants was to manage oil palm waste products while ensuring sustainability and providing some profits to Felda.

It is one of the efforts taken by Felda Global Group under its Clean Development Mechanism to ensure that the environment is properly taken care.

Each of the new power plant is capable of generating between 1.5 and 2.0 megawatt of electricity power a month.

Based on the annual target for fixing the biogas traps, 49 of the total 71 plants belonging to Felda Global Group are expected to have the biogas traps in five years time.
