13/05/2011 (The Borneo Post) - JT Oil Palm (JTOP) Development Sdn Bhd signed a biogas Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project agreement with GenPower Carbon Solutions LP (GPCS) yesterday to create sustainable development.

According to GPCS chief executive officer, Guillermo Espiga, the project was part of the commitment of both companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to create clean and renewable energy.

“The main objective of the project is to reduce the green house emissions by capturing the biogas and use it as a source of energy.

We captured about 50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year,” he said.

He was speaking to the press after the stakeholder meeting for the CDM project at Wealth House Palm Oil Mill in Bruit Land District yesterday.

According to him, renewable energy was in high demand especially among European nations.

“Industrialised nations that signed and rectified the Kyoto Protocol had an obligation to reduce carbon emission and one way was to invest in a project like this one,” he said.

He also said that GPCS would undertake the responsibility to qualify the project under CDM requirements and to verify and market the carbon credits.

“The carbon credits would then be sold to buyers in Europe in order to reduce green house emissions.

Basically, we invest in this project to produce carbon credits and sell it to somebody that needs to reduce carbon emissions,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, under the agreement, JTOP would provide the ‘site’ at JTOP Crude Palm Oil (CPO) for GPCS to invest on the project.

GPCS would invest on the tank bio-digester system and equipment to trap and monitor greenhouse gas emissions generated from anaerobic digestion of the effluent.

The trapped gas would be supplied to the CPO mill as clean and renewable fuel for energy generation.

GPCS is a worldwide developer of carbon credit projects with a focus on methane avoidance in the agricultural sector, landfills, and coal mines, biomass to energy, fuel switching, and energy efficiency.

Also present were the director of GenPower Carbon Solution Services (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Rupam Raja and Jaya Tiasa general manager, Jin Kee Mou.
