Cadbury\'s move to palm oil shows little impact on sales

17/07/2009 (3news.co.nz) - While today's iconic rolling of the Jaffas down Dunedin's Baldwin Street marked the end of the city's week-long chocolate carnival, it hasn't been a completely smooth ride.

A small number of protestors attended the event and say that it's not just Cadbury's Jaffas that are going downhill.

"We are concerned that palm oil is being used in products and whether it's from genuinely sustainable sources," Doug Lilly from Anti Palm Oil Enterprises told 3 News.

However Cadbury insists that its decision to start using palm oil has not backfired.

"Some people are going to be upset, but other people will embrace that change," says Cadbury New Zealand Managing Director Matthew Oldham. "I think there is a vocal minority who have made a lot of noise around the issue, but in terms of sales they are going well and we haven't seen any impact."

Rival chocolate manufacturer Whittakkers says the feedback they are getting is that sticking to pure coco butter is better and they have had to expand their Porirua factory to cope with increasing demand.

"This year has been positive for us," says Whittakkers Marketing Manager Philip Poole. "We had very positive sales in June so far the sale in July have been very positive as well."

Globally there has been an increasing boycott of products which contain palm oil or have any association, because many rainforests are being illegally cut down to make room for more palm oil groves.

However despite this, Cadbury says sales are as strong as ever.
