27/02/2009 (Business Times, Malaysia) - PALM oil exports may fall 8 per cent in February from the previous month, independent surveyor Intertek said today.

A total of 1.17 million metric tons of palm oil will probably be tracked through Malaysian ports this month, Intertek said in a report today, before it releases final results tomorrow.

Malaysia exported 1.27 million tons of palm oil in January, the surveyor said.

Meanwhile, palm oil futures in Malaysia advanced, boosting this week’s gains, on signs that an increase in exports this year will continue even amid a global recession.

Exports of the tropical oil from Malaysia, the second-largest producer after Indonesia, have risen 20 per cent since the year started to 2.34 million metric tons by Feb 25 compared with the same period last year, according to data from independent cargo surveyor Societe Generale de Surveillance.

Palm oil for May delivery rose 0.5 per cent to RM1,900 (US$515) a ton on the Malaysia Derivatives Exchange at the 12.30pm trading break.
