5/6/07 (The Star) - KUALA LUMPUR: Producing biodegradable plastic from palm oil may soon be possible if research between the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) goes well.
"We are now conducting research with MIT, and we hope to do a pilot project within two years.
"Such technology is already available in the United States -- they are using rapeseed oil to produce biodegradable plastic," said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis.
"So we are studying to see if it's possible to do the same using palm oil," he said here on Tuesday after awarding the Malaysia Good Design Mark 2006 to 15 local products in various categories.
The award, organised by the Malaysia Design Council, recognises efforts made by the industrial sector in carrying out research and development programmes.
