Abia Approves Presco Palm Oil Project to Create 5,000 Jobs and Expand Local Business Opportunities
20/10/2026 (MSME Africa Online) - The Abia State Government has approved an agro-industrial project by Presco Plc to expand palm oil production in the state, with a target of creating 5,000 jobs and generating opportunities for local businesses.
The project will involve rehabilitating the Ulonna Farm Settlement in Umuahia and developing additional palm plantations in Ozuitem and other parts of the state.
Governor Alex Otti announced the approval during a meeting with a delegation from Presco, led by its chairman, Rashid Sarumi, at the Government House in Umuahia.
Otti said the state government would support the company in accessing additional land and completing the necessary agreements to enable the project to begin operations.
He described Abia as a suitable destination for investment, citing its skilled workforce, infrastructure and government support for businesses.
Sarumi said Presco had spent seven months engaging stakeholders to prepare for the project, which he described as viable.
Beyond the planned 5,000 jobs, the project is expected to generate tax revenue for the state and create demand for goods and services needed to run the plantations. This could provide opportunities for local suppliers, service providers and other businesses that support agricultural operations.
Sarumi commended the state government for its support and expressed confidence in Presco’s ability to establish a successful operation in Abia.
The project adds to efforts to expand agricultural production and attract private investment in the state. For local businesses, its development could open up opportunities to supply goods and services as plantation activities grow.
