US Sunflower Oil Market Caught in a Supply-Demand Tug of-War as Stocks Rise

28/09/2026 (Chem Analyst) - Price action for sunflower oil stayed compressed all month, with the FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index up 0.6 percent to 196.9 points in August, its third straight gain, though the rise was led by palm and soybean oil while sunflower and rapeseed values slipped slightly. USDA's Oil Crops Outlook reported sunflowerseed crush remaining elevated despite competition from record U.S. soybean crush, while EU sunflowerseed output was trimmed on dryness in France, Spain, and Hungary, partly offset by stronger Bulgarian and Romanian crops. Black Sea and Argentine sunflowerseed supply improved after tight prior seasons, easing global feedstock costs.

Domestically for sunflower oil, steady crusher operations and rising high-oleic sunflower output kept feedstock costs contained, limiting upward pressure on FOB values. Early August saw West Coast crushers running at consistent rates, while mid-month gains in output from newly commissioned high-oleic processing lines added availability and pushed coastal stocks higher. By late August for sunflower oil, neutral-to bearish sentiment prevailed as downstream buyers drew down summer-accumulated inventories rather than chasing prompt cargoes.

Demand patterns for sunflower oil stayed uneven across end-users. The edible-oil and food-manufacturing sector remained soft, with domestic bottlers and snack-food manufacturers largely relying on existing inventories instead of increasing prompt purchases. International buyers were also restrained, with price-sensitive purchases to Mexico and South Korea limited to immediate needs, while sunflower oil's continued premium to soybean oil constrained substitution-based demand. Retail demand for non-GMO oils stayed broadly stable following the seasonal grilling period, providing a modest floor to spot activity. Renewable-diesel users showed limited incremental interest, as blending requirements were already largely covered.

Looking ahead for sunflower oil, the outlook is mixed, with small gains expected early in autumn before modest softening later in the cycle. Month-on-month moves are projected higher in September through November, then slightly lower from December through February, reflecting a tug of war between Black Sea export risks and improved U.S. acreage and crushing activity. Price direction remains subject to geopolitical developments, crop progression, and global logistics conditions.
