If I were palm oil in your bathroom mirror

The Star (11/08/2026) - BEFORE breakfast, before your first cup of coffee, before the frying pan begins to sizzle and before anyone reaches for a bottle of cooking oil, there is a good chance we have already met – not in your kitchen, but quietly, in front of your bathroom mirror.

As you wash your face, smooth moisturiser across your cheeks, massage shampoo into your hair, brush your teeth or apply a favourite shade of lipstick, I may already be there, working silently and asking for neither attention nor applause.

Surprised?

Most people know me only as cooking oil. That is understandable. I have spent decades accompanying curries, noodles, doughnuts, biscuits and countless family meals. Yet, that is only one chapter of my story.

Allow me to introduce myself again. If I were palm oil, I would tell you that I also live a second life inside your bathroom cabinet and chances are, you have never noticed me.

Behind the bathroom mirror

Like many husbands, I have occasionally found myself waiting in a cosmetics store while my wife explored rows of moisturisers, cleansers, shampoos and lipsticks. I was probably there more as a porter than a shopper.

The shelves promised radiance, hydration, confidence, repair, renewal and, occasionally, miracles that even science might struggle to explain.

Yet, as I looked at those elegant bottles and colourful tubes, another question crossed my mind: how many of these products contain ingredients that began life as an oil palm fruit beneath the tropical sun?

The answer surprised even me. Far more than most consumers would imagine.

Perhaps, the main reason you seldom recognise me is that I rarely introduce myself simply as “palm oil”.

Instead, I arrive wearing other names: glycerin, stearic acid, palmitic acid, cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol and glyceryl stearate.

These names may sound like unfamiliar characters from a chemistry textbook. Yet many are useful building blocks that can be derived from vegetable oils, including palm oil and palm kernel oil, and incorporated into cosmetics and personal-care products.

Think of me as an actor. You know the face; you simply do not recognise me in every costume.

Palm oil does not flow directly from a mill into a lipstick or moisturiser.

It first enters the world of oleochemistry, where oils and fats can be separated into components such as fatty acids and glycerol, then transformed into specialised ingredients for skincare, haircare, soaps, detergents, pharmaceuticals and many other products.

I leave the plantation as agriculture and arrive at your dressing table as chemistry.

Beauty needs more than beauty

Have you ever wondered why a face cream feels smooth rather than greasy, why shampoo lathers consistently, why body lotion spreads evenly, or why lipstick holds its shape in a handbag on a warm afternoon? The answer lies not in magic, but in formulation.

A successful cosmetic product is a carefully balanced system in which every ingredient has a purpose.

Some attract moisture. Some soften the skin. Some help oil and water remain mixed. Others improve thickness, stability or texture, while some help cleansers foam or conditioners spread through hair.

Creating cosmetics is rather like conducting an orchestra.

Everyone notices the violin solo, but few notice the second oboe. Yet, remove enough quiet musicians and the music no longer holds together.

Palm-derived ingredients often play those supporting roles – rarely noticed, easily overlooked, yet important to the performance of many formulations.

One morning, while sitting inside a cosmetic bag, I imagined a conversation.

Lipstick smiled proudly. “Everyone admires my colour.” “I know,” I replied.

“They compliment my elegance.”

“I know.”

“They carry me to weddings, interviews and important dinners.” “I know.”

She paused. “And what exactly do you do?” “I help you stay together.” She was not amused.

Yet lipstick is an elegant balancing act.

Too soft, and it may bend or melt. Too hard, and it drags uncomfortably across the lips.

Too oily, and the colour may smear. Too dry, and the finish may crack.

Palm-derived ingredients may be used by formulators to help achieve the desired balance of firmness, smooth application, colour dispersion, texture and stability.

The praise belongs to the lipstick; quietly, I celebrate from behind the curtain.

Face cream whispered another secret. “People think moisturising is simply about adding oil.”

I smiled. “Not quite.”

Healthy skin depends partly on maintaining its protective barrier and limiting excessive water loss.

Moisturisers are formulated to improve comfort, soften the skin and help it retain moisture.

Different ingredients perform different jobs. Humectants help attract and hold water. Emollients help smooth and soften the skin.

Emulsifiers help oil and water remain blended. Texture modifiers give creams the consistency consumers expect.

Without the right emulsifier, your face cream might begin to resemble salad dressing. Nobody applauds an emulsifier, but everyone notices when it fails.

Good chemistry often goes unnoticed. That is usually a sign that it is doing its job.

Our skin itself is extraordinary.

It is the body’s largest organ and our first line of contact with the outside world.

Every day, it faces sunlight, dust, pollution, microbes, dry air, frequent washing, changing temperatures and the steady passage of time.

years, however persuasive the advertisement. But well-formulated skincare products can help maintain moisture, reduce dryness and improve comfort.

That is not merely vanity. For many people, particularly those with dry or ageing skin, it is part of ordinary care.

From plantation to personal care

Few consumers see the journey behind a single cosmetic ingredient. Mine begins as a fruit growing high above the ground on an oil palm.

Harvesters often begin work early, cutting ripe fresh fruit bunches and moving them quickly to the mill.

There, oil is extracted and refined before entering another world entirely — the world of chemists, engineers, laboratory technicians, quality specialists, product developers, manufacturing plants and research centres.

Through carefully controlled processes, natural oils are transformed into ingredients with specific properties required by formulators.

By the time I reach your bathroom shelf, I may no longer resemble the golden cooking oil you know.

From plantation to mill, from mill to refinery, from refinery to laboratory, from laboratory to factory and finally from factory to your face cream, shampoo or lipstick—it is a remarkable journey hidden inside an ordinary morning routine.

Ask most people where palm oil is used and they will probably answer: cooking. They would be right, but only partly.

Look around your bathroom: facial cleanser, moisturiser, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, lipstick, foundation, mascara and sunscreen.

Not every product contains palm-derived ingredients, and not every ingredient with a familiar chemical name necessarily comes from palm oil.

The same ingredient may be produced from different natural or synthetic sources.

But palm oil and palm kernel oil are important renewable raw materials for the oleochemical industry, and their derivatives can appear across a wide range of personal-care products.

Sometimes the most familiar things hide in the least expected places.

Imagine waking tomorrow to discover that all palm-derived cosmetic ingredients had vanished overnight.

Would the beauty and personal-care industry collapse?

Of course not. Science is innovative, alternative ingredients exist, and formulators constantly develop new solutions.

But removing a major source of oleochemical raw materials would require many manufacturers to review formulations, secure replacements, test product stability, confirm safety, maintain performance and manage costs.

A substitute is not automatically better merely because it is different. It must still be produced somewhere and will require land, water, energy, transport and processing.

The more useful question is not whether an ingredient comes from palm oil, soybean oil, rapeseed oil, petroleum or another source. The better questions are: how efficiently is it produced? What environmental and social impacts accompany it? Can its origin be traced? Is there credible evidence of responsible production?

Sometimes we only appreciate the supporting cast after the curtain falls.

Beauty with responsibility

This is where the conversation must move beyond chemistry.

Consumers today are asking legitimate questions. Where did this ingredient come from? Was it produced responsibly? Were forests and wildlife protected? Were workers treated fairly? Can the supply chain be traced?

These questions should never be dismissed as inconvenient. They deserve honest answers.

Palm oil has clear advantages. The oil palm is a highly productive oil crop, supplying large quantities of oil from a comparatively limited land area.

Its oils are versatile, widely available and suitable for numerous food and non-food applications.

But productivity does not excuse poor practice. Like every major agricultural commodity, palm oil has environmental and social risks that must be addressed through responsible land use, credible certification, better traceability, stronger labour safeguards, transparent reporting and continuous improvement.

Malaysia has invested in sustainability standards, research and certification, and progress has been made.

Yet sustainability is not a trophy to display on a shelf. It is a discipline that must be practised repeatedly, measured honestly and improved continually.

Palm oil should not seek exemption from scrutiny, nor should it be judged only by old assumptions while genuine progress is ignored.

Consumers deserve transparency. Producers deserve fairness. Science deserves evidence. The planet deserves responsible stewardship.

The bathroom mirror reveals our appearance, but it does not reveal the countless people whose work makes the morning routine possible.

They include the plantation workers who harvest the fruit, the drivers who transport it, the mill workers who process it, the chemists who separate and transform it and the scientists who test it.

It also includes the engineers who scale up production, the formulators who combine it with other ingredients, the factory workers who fill the bottles and seal the tubes, and the retailers who place them on the shelves.

Many unseen hands contribute to a simple bottle of shampoo or tube of lipstick beside the basin.

We celebrate the finished product, but rarely think about the chain of labour, knowledge and responsibility behind it. Perhaps we should.

The reflection

The next time you pick up a cosmetic product, pause before looking only at the brand name, promise or price. Read the ingredient list.

Some words may be difficult to pronounce. Some may sound unfamiliar. Behind them lies a partnership between agriculture, chemistry, engineering and human ingenuity.

But labels do not always reveal the original feedstock from which an ingredient was made. A consumer cannot necessarily determine from the name alone whether it came from palm oil, another vegetable oil or a synthetic source.

That is why traceability matters. A certificate can help and a claim can reassure, but evidence must travel through the supply chain.

The future of responsible consumption will depend not merely on attractive words printed on packaging, but on whether companies can explain where ingredients came from and how they were produced.

Tomorrow morning, before rushing into another busy day, stand for a moment before your bathroom mirror.

The lipstick in your handbag, the moisturiser beside the basin, the shampoo in your shower and the sunscreen protecting your family may each contain ingredients whose journey began beneath the fronds of an oil palm in the tropics.

I never expected to become the face of beauty, nor did I ask to be admired. I was content simply to serve quietly - helping products cleanse, moisturise, soften, stabilise and perform as intended.

Perhaps that is the deeper lesson of the bathroom mirror. In life, as in cosmetics, the most valuable contributions are often the ones we hardly notice.

True beauty is not merely what stares back at us from the glass. It is also found in the unseen science, the honest labour, the quiet craftsmanship and the shared responsibility that make the reflection possible.

And if I were palm oil, that would be more than enough.
