06/05/2026 (Oils and Fats International) - Indonesian domestic consumption of palm-based biodiesel totalled 3.9bn litres in the year to date up to 13 April, an energy ministry official was quoted as saying in a Hydrocarbon Processing report.

Senior energy ministry official Eniya Listiani Dewi made her comments during a B50 testing event in Bandung, West Java, as Indonesia prepared to increase the mandatory blending rate from 40% palm oil-based biodiesel (B40) to 50% (B50), the 22 April report said.

The programme is part of the government’s strategy to reduce dependence on fuel imports and mitigate Iran war risks.

Currently undergoing tests on use in cars, trucks, farming equipment, mining machinery and ships, a three-month transition period was scheduled to start on 1 July to make the switch to the new B50 blend, the energy ministry said.

Dewi said the fuel specifications for B50 would be improved compared to B40, with lower water and monoglyceride content.

A water content test conducted at the event in West Java showed the B50 contained 208.81 parts/million (PPM) water, below the 300 PPM standard set by the ministry.

The energy ministry said the tests had shown fuel consumption was within the manufacturer’s standard range, without any significant decrease in performance.

At the time of the report, the Indonesian government had not announced the additional biodiesel quota required to implement the B50 programme in the second semester of this year, Eniya said.

Under the B40 mandate, Indonesia had allocated 15.65M kilolitres of biodiesel for 2026, the report said.
