Cooking Oil Prices Surge Amid War Impact in West Asia

24/03/2026 (The South India Times) - The impact of the ongoing conflict in West Asia is now being felt in everyday household expenses, with cooking oil prices witnessing a noticeable surge across markets. Traders say the uncertainty in global supply chains has started reflecting directly on retail prices.

Compared to the beginning of the year, the increase has been gradual but consistent. While prices saw a slight rise in February, March has recorded a sharper jump, pushing essential kitchen items further out of reach for many families.

At present, palm oil is being sold at around Rs 145 per litre, while sunflower oil has climbed to nearly Rs 175 per litre. The final price varies depending on the brand, but the upward trend remains common across all categories.

In terms of recent changes, sunflower oil has increased by about Rs 21 per litre, palm oil by Rs 12, and groundnut oil by around Rs 16. Retailers attribute this rise to disruptions in imports and rising international prices linked to geopolitical tensions.

Market experts warn that the situation may not stabilize immediately. If the conflict continues, supply constraints could worsen, leading to further increases in cooking oil prices in the coming days.

Consumers, especially middle class households, are already feeling the strain as essential commodities become more expensive. Many are now adjusting their monthly budgets, hoping for some relief if global conditions improve.
