19/06/2024 (New Straits Times), Kuala Lumpur - The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has uncovered a case involving a supplier suspected of short-weighting cooking oil packs.

Through a TikTok post, the ministry said a team of enforcement officers from Putrajaya discovered the supplier's cooking oil packets had been sold below the described weight of 1 kilogramme for the past three months.

It said that each cooking oil packet was underweight between 20 to 100 grams

"Although this amount may seem minor, it constitutes an offense as it involves the misappropriation of government subsidies," said @nforceteamkpdn.

One of the workers was questioned about the weight discrepancy and blamed it as a machine fault.

"The machine is broken, its screws have been loose for the past three months."

"I informed my boss, but he acted as if he didn't know," he said.

The ministry said the case falls under false trade descriptions under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.

If found guilty, the company faces a fine of up to RM250,000 for the first offense and RM500,000 for the second offense.
