Minyakita Shortage Ahead of Ramadan; Ministry to Raise Supply of Cooking Oil
31/01/2022 (TEMPO.CO), Jakarta - Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan stated that the government and producers would increase the supply of packaged and bulk cooking oil by 450,000 tons per month from February to April 2023. Zulkifli said that the plan was aimed at meeting people's needs during the fasting month of Ramadan until Eid 2023.
The increase is also in line with the Trade Ministry's decision to increase the domestic market obligation (DMO) to overcome the current shortage of the government’s packaged cooking oil brand of Minyakita.
The ministry also held an evaluation meeting with cooking oil producers and the National Food Agency on Monday, January 30, 2023. "So there is a hike of 50 percent from the monthly DMO which is allocated at 300,000 tons per month," Zulkifli stated in a written statement dated Monday, January 30, 2023.
According to Minister Zulkifli, cooking oil producers have stated their commitment to increasing the domestic supply of cooking oil. Zulkifli said that they would report the realization every Friday to the Director General of Domestic Trade.
In addition, business actors would also provide guidance to their respective distribution networks so that the highest retail price (HET) is properly implemented.
The HET for Minyakita at the consumer level is set at Rp14,000 per liter or Rp15,500 per kilogram for bulk cooking oil.
On January 27, 2023, Zulhas recorded that the average retail price of cooking oil was Rp14,700 per liter, up by 3.52 percent. Meanwhile, Minyakita is priced at Rp14,700 per liter, which is 5 percent higher compared to December 2022. The prices are higher than the HET.
Trade Minister also stated that he would ensure an adequate supply of cooking oil in traditional markets and modern retailers throughout Indonesia.
