Brazilian soy mills fear losses due to energy shortageBrazil, Jun 8, 2001 (Valor Economico/SABI via COMTEX) -- Brazilian soyaprocessors may have to decrease production of bran by around 625,000m tonsand oil by around 150,000m tons between July and September if the goal ofa 15% reduction in energy costs is maintained,. This represents a loss ofUS$150mil in revenue, according to the Associacao Brasileira dasIndustrias de Oleos Vegetais (Aboive), the industry organization, whichestimates that an energy consumption reduction of 7% can be achieved bymeans of conservation measures without compromising production. However,if the prescribed goal of a 15% reduction is maintained, production willhave to be reduced. This will have a serious effect on exports as theinternal market would be served first. The industry is studying measuresto meet foreign orders by possibly having some of the group's factoriessituated outside Brazil make up for the decreased production.
