Argus Media (11/05/2021) - Japanese electricity supplier J-Power plans to produce wood pellets from waste palm oil trees in Malaysia in keeping with Japan's carbon neutral goal by 2050.

J-Power is considering co-firing the wood pellets with coal at unspecified power generation plants to help curb its carbon dioxide emissions. A detailed schedule of the project and the planned volume of wood pellet output are unavailable.

The company is targeting carbon neutral power generation by 2050, aiming to scrap its ageing coal-fired units while introducing advanced technology including biomass and ammonia co-fired units. The company plans to upgrade the 500MW No.2 unit at its Matsushima coal-fired power plant by installing a gasification furnace to boost its thermal efficiency.
