Romania's 2020 sunflower output highest in EU - provisional data
31.03.2021 (seenews.com) - BUCHAREST (Romania), March 31 (SeeNews) - Romania's sunflower output was the highest in the EU last year despite a 42% annual decrease, the country's statistical office said on Wednesday, citing provisional data.
In 2020, Romania's sunflower production stood at 2.07 million tonnes, INS said in a press release.
The country's maize output was the second highest in the EU after France's, while in terms of fields sown with maize, it ranked first in the EU. Maize output fell to 10.8 million tonnes in 2020, from 17.4 million tonnes a year earlier.
Last year, Romania harvested 6.41 million tonnes of wheat, compared to 10.2 million tonnes harvested in 2019.
The country brought in 18.9 million tonnes of grain, down 38% on the year, due to prolonged drought and lack of irrigation.
Bean legumes output fell by an annual 48% to 122,000 tonnes in 2020, while oil plants harvest amounted to 3.11 million tonnes, down 35%.
Vegetables production edged down 0.4% on the year to 3.51 million tonnes.
Romania harvested 2.68 million tonnes of potatoes last year, compared to 2.62 million tonnes in 2019.
Grapes output fell by an annual 4.1% to 938,000 tonnes, while the entire fruit production rose 27% on the year to 837,000 tonnes.
