2001 PIPOC To Discuss Latest Trends In Palm Oil In

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- If you want to know what's buzzing inthe palm oil industry, perhaps the 2001 International Palm Oil Congress(2001 PIPOC) to be held here Aug 20 to 23 is the best place to be at.

Organised by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), this year's PIPOC isthemed, "Cutting-Edge Technologies for Sustained Competitiveness".

MPOB director-general Datuk Dr Yusof Basiron said in a recent interviewthat the congress is designed for all in the palm oil and other oil andfats industries.

2001 PIPOC will be held at two venues -- Hotel Istana and Royal Mutiara(formerly KL Hilton).

An estimated 1,200 participants from almost 40 countries such as Chile,South Africa, Poland and Italy are expected to attend. They includeresearch and development (R&D) personnel, scientists, planters, millers,manufacturers, traders, economists, policy makers and academicians.

Dr Yusof said 2001 PIPOC would be an opportunity for people to look atwhat the palm oil industry has to offer, especially after the recovery inpalm oil prices of late.

The congress, he said, would present a broad scenario of the potential ofthe palm oil industry in the future.

"PIPOC is not just about R&D but many other aspects of technologicaldevelopments and new opportunities in the palm oil industry," heexplained.

The congress is to be broken up into the agriculture conference, chemistryand technology conference, food technology and nutrition conference,oleochemicals conference and economics and marketing conference.

"Participants can learn as much as possible from numerous research andtechnical papers as well as new ideas at 2001 PIPOC," Dr Yusof said.

There will also be a trade exhibition in conjunction with the conference.

"This (2001 PIPOC) will become not only a source of future businessdevelopment but also a meeting place for participants to catch up on thelatest technology and trends to enable them to network among themselves interms of business development," he said.

Dr Yusof said one of the highlights of the congress is the launch ofe-Pomex, an electronic trading mechanism for palm oil at the openingceremony.

"This would be another milestone (for the palm oil industry)," he said.

This also showed that the palm oil industry is keeping abreast with thelatest in information technology (IT), he said.

"We are not left behind, we are moving ahead compared with some otherindustries," he said in reference to the launch of e-Pomex.
