Hundreds of Brit jobs put at risk as EU trade war with Indonesia looms
22.04.2018 (The Sun) - Airbus fears a £1.5billion deal to supply planes to Indonesia has hit the rocks because of an attempt by Brussels to ban the country’s major exports.
It will be a major blow to the future of the aerospace giant’s plants which employ 13,000 people at Bristol and Chester.
Indonesia is threatening a tit-for-tat boycott of European goods in protest over EU plans to ban imports of palm oil from the would-be buyers.
The global palm oil market is worth £65billion a year and 85 per cent is grown in Indonesia and Malaysia.
The European Parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban imports of palm oil, a vital commodity but the worst driver of deforestation, which causes climate change.
Last week the ban was discussed at a meeting between the UK Ambassador in Jakarta and Indonesia’s state-owned Enterprises Minister, Rini Mariani Soemarno.
He made clear no trade talks with Europeans would take place until the palm oil ban is lifted.
