The Malaysia Insight (01/02/2018) - The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry has given an assurance that Malaysia will not be affected if the government decides to boycott food and agricultural products from the European Union.

Deputy Minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said most of the goods imported from EU countries comprised dairy products, which were not a staple for Malaysians.

"Why do we need to be afraid? We don't import basic food items, such as rice or meat, from the EU.

"We import non-essential foods, such as cheese and other dairy products. We know that not all people consume these products, so we do not have to worry if the government decides to boycott their products,” he said during a press conference after officiating at the fourth Pasir Salak Single Mothers' Association annual general meeting, which was attended by 500 members, at the Pekan Rabu Hall in Chenderong Balai today.

On Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said the government was reviewing the purchase of products from EU countries after the bloc decided to exclude palm oil from its biofuel mix and renewable energy by 2021. – Bernama, January 31, 2018.
