Ministry Of Plantation Industries And Commodities Economic And Technical Mission On Palm Oil, Timber And Rubber Products To Iran And India 5 - 9 February 201
06/02/2017 (Bernama) - The Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, YB Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong, will be leading a Economic and Technical Mission on Palm Oil, Timber and Rubber Products to Iran and India from 5 to 9 February 2017. The delegation comprises of representatives from the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC), Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), Malaysia Rubber Board (MRB) and Malaysian Timber Council (MTC), and the private sector.
The objectives of this mission are to:
- promote and strengthen exports of palm oil, timber and rubber products to Iran and India;
- strengthen business linkages between the private sectors of Iran and India with Malaysia;
- officiate the opening of the Regional Office of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) as well as Palm Oil Trade Fair and Seminar (POTS Iran 2017) in Tehran, Iran and Palm Oil Networking Seminar in Mumbai, India; and
- bilateral discussion with the Ministers responsible for Trade and Agriculture and Health in Iran.
During the visit to Iran from 5 – 7 February 2017, YB Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong will convene discussions with the private sector in Iran including with Tehran Timber Importers and major palm oil and rubber products importers. The discussions aimed at promoting exports of palm oil, timber and rubber products to Iran as well as strengthen private sector linkages. In addition, YB Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong will also officiate POTS Iran 2017 which is aimed at disseminating the latest information regarding the nutritional benefits of palm oil.
YB Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong will also hold bilateral discussions with Iranian Ministers including H.E. Mahmoud Hojjati, Minister of Agriculture and H.E Mohammad Reza Ne’matzadeh, Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade. These bilateral meetings will focus on among others, issues related to the safety and nutritional benefits of palm oil and areas of cooperation to strengthen bilateral trade.
During the visit to India on 8 February 2017, YB Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong will officiate the Palm Oil Networking Seminar and convene a Roundtable discussion with the Solvent Extractor’s Association of India. These meetings will focus on areas to strengthen palm oil trade. In addition, YB Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong will convene a bilateral discussion with the Chief Minister of Maharastra State to explore possibile areas for cooperation.
For the period of January - November 2016, total trade with Iran was valued at RM2.59 billion. Total exports was valued at RM1.97 billion and out of this, commodity products contributed RM1.55 billion (78.7% total exports). Major commodity products exported for the period January – November 2016 were palm oil products valued at RM1.21 billion, timber products valued at RM33.76 million and rubber products valued at RM268.94 million.
In the case of India, for the period of January - November 2016, total trade with India was valued at RM44.18 billion Total exports was valued at RM29.24 billion and out of this, commodity products contributed RM9.57 billion (32.7% total exports). Major commodity products exported for the period January – November 2016 were palm oil products valued at RM7.8 billion, timber products valued at RM1.42 billion and rubber products valued RM279.53 million.
