25/11/2016 (TVNZ) - A minister from each state, territory and federal government of Australasia, (NZ and Australia) will meet today to decide whether palm oil labelling progresses to the next stage of policy development.

Palm oil labelling is not required on products sold in New Zealand, and Minister Jo Goodhew, alongside nine others from Australia are meeting today in Brisbane.

Organiser of the Australasian campaign pushing for labelling, Ben Dowdle, told 1 NEWS, "we have had over 30,000 postcards presented to parliament including 9000 emails".

There have also been 50,000 emails sent to Ministers in Australia, organised by Zoos Victoria, said Mr Dowdle.

He said 92 per cent of Kiwis support the change according to independent polling.

Campaigners pushing for a change say New Zealand is lagging behind the US and Europe where palm oil is clearly outlined on food.

The Victorian Government has committed to supporting palm oil labelling.

"Victorians have again shown that they want to stand up for the most vulnerable parts of our community. They have written in their thousands to protect the orangutans and we will listen to them," said Victoria Minister for Health, Jill Hennessy.

This is the first time that the Victorian Government has taken a position on the labelling of palm oil.
