Pakistan Seeks Quota-free Market Access to Indonesia
04/08/2016 (The Nation) - Federal Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan has urged his Indonesian counterpart to reconsider the import quota policy for Pakistan for items included in Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) and expressed the hope that a quota-free market access would help Pakistani exports to grow.
Talking to Minister for Trade of Indonesia Enggartiasto Lukita on the sidelines of 12th World Islamic Economic Forum in Jakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday, he said that barriers in the way of trade were being phased out in the modern trading system.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had nominated Dastgir to represent Pakistan on his behalf at the Forum.
The commerce minister appreciated the fact that PTA between both the countries had helped the bilateral trade to grow.
“The import of Palm Oil from Indonesia has exponentially increased the volume of imports from Indonesia and in future Pakistan might start importing coal from Indonesia in large quantities for electricity generation,” he added.
Dastgir urged his Indonesian counterpart to ensure the implementation of MoU signed between the two countries for purchase of rice from Pakistan.
The first review meeting of PTA is scheduled to be held on 15th & 16th August, 2016 in Jakarta, where both sides would share their evaluation of PTA since its inception.
The meeting will also propose the future course of action to further strengthen trade ties and enhance bilateral trade.
The Indonesian minister expressed the desire to convert PTA into FTA.
He asserted that signing of full scale trade agreement between the two countries would open up new avenues of trade in goods and might lead to a point where both countries could agree to expand bilateral preferential treatment to services as well.
