03/08/2016 (Bernama) - Realising a need to actively increase and promote environmental awareness, 52 out of the total 71 palm oil mills in the state signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state department of environment (DOE) today.

Its director, Rosli Zul said the MoU would also enable the mills to comply with the rules and regulations set in its operation, besides being the department's watchdog in environmental care.

He said he was pleased that in line with the state's prominent status of having the most palm oil mills in the Peninsula, the mills had set up the state's environment club.

DOE deputy director-general Ismail Ithnin also commended the establishment of the club and intended to make it a state DOE key performance indicator, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak that had countless palm oil mills.

He noted since 2013, a total of 286 companies of various fields had signed MoUs with DOE.
