18/07/2016 (Tempo.co) - The government will extend the moratorium on the conversion of natural forests to be converted into oil palm plantations.

This is in accordance with the mandate of President Joko Widodo.

"We want to reorganize palm oil lands, including increasing farm production of existing land and replanting," Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darwin Nasution after chairing a coordination meeting Jakarta on Friday.

The meeting was attended by Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya, Trade Minister Thomas Trikasih Lembong, Industry Minister and Agrarian Minister Saleh Husin and Spatial Planning/Head of National Land Agency (BPN) Ferry Mursidan Baldan and some officials from the relevant ministries.

In addition, some representatives of oil businessmen were also invited to express their views.

The meeting also agreed to impose a moratorium for the next 5 years.

"We will also incorporate standards as contained in the ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil System). So don’t worry too much as there will be no transition period, " Darwin said.

The moratorium on palm oil has been around since 2011 through Presidential Instruction signed by former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

"So this policy is still a series of policies that have been impelemnted before," Darwin said.
