09/03/2016 (Daily Express) - Government-linked companies (GLCs) and the private sector are encouraged to build palm oil processing mills in the district to cater to the needs of growers here.

Kuala Penyu Assemblyman Limus Jury said the holders currently have to send the produce to a collection centre in Lumadan, Beaufort, about 60km away.

Prior to this, there was only one mill to cater to growers from the Beaufort, Membakut, Kuala Penyu and Menumbok areas, but the facility was closed later.

"Presently, Kuala Penyu has become the main route and access for the holders to send the palm oil produce from the mill to tanker vessels docking at a jetty in the township here.

"This situation shows that the district is ideal for setting up a palm oil mill.

"I am inviting GLCs and private sectors to consider this move as it would not only be helping small and medium holders but also cater to the needs of nearby districts," he said after opening a general meeting of "Koperasi Penanam Sawit Mapan Kuala Penyu Sabah Berhad" organised by Malaysia Palm Oil Board (MPOB), here.

He also urged planters here to join the cooperative that could help to encourage the industry move forward and enhance the socio-economic standards of participants.

He said reportedly about 1,000 small and medium holders have joined the newly-setup cooperative involving 1,105 hectares of oil palm plantations.

Limus said the planters' participation in the cooperative could also realise the government's aim to help empower the cultivation oil palm industry here.
