Palm Oil Price to Remain Stagnant: Sawit Watch
04/01/2016 (Tempo.co) - Deputy Director of palm oil business watchdog Sawit Watch Achmad Surambo estimated that it is very likely that the price of will remain stagnant and be difficult to rise.
"This condition is caused by the prices of fuel and natural gases that are also stagnant,” Achmad said to Tempo on Saturday (2/1).
He also said that another factor that causes the stagnant price of palm oil is due to the slowdown of the economy of countries that have become major exports of crude palm oil.
Meanwhile, related to the government’s plan that will focus more on palm oil consumption for domestic market, Achmad said that it is a good decision; yet, he said that it must bring impacts to low-scale palm oil farmers and plantation labors.
He also said that consumption of CPO for biofuels has actually despite the fact that the price of palm oil remains stagnant.
Furthermore, to face the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), Achmad said that there is nothing to worry about because Indonesia’s palm oil industries have already undergone liberalization.
"The possibility is that technical workers will flood our country,” he said.
Therefore, he also urged the government to regulate and supervise workers in palm oil plantations so that local workers will be able to compete with foreign workers.
