16/11/2015 (Bernama) - Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) in collaboration with Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM) will be organising the International Biomass Conference Malaysia 2015 (IBCM 2015) on Dec 8 to 9.

The event will be officiated by the Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and accompanied by Minister in the Prime Minister s Department Datuk Mah Siew Keong, said MATRADE in a statement here today.

This annual event, themed 'Being Local and Going Global: Sustainable Biomass Value Chains' will focus on building a strong and sustainable biomass industry in Malaysia and in the region by integrating the local industry with the global value chain.

The event will bring together key industry players, technology and solution providers, scientists and leading biomass stakeholders to share insights, explore business opportunities and partnership models to move the agenda of the biomass industry forward.

MATRADE Chief Executive Officer Datuk Dzulkifli Mahmud said, The conference will be a good platform to promote the downstream sectors in Malaysia s biomass industry.

BIOMASS SECTOR'S POTENTIAL

There are so many products in the biomass sector that can be integrated into the global value chain which in turn can widen Malaysia s export base, such as biofuels, biochemical and even end products like bioplastics and bio-polyethylene terephthalate (bio-PET), he said in the statement.

It is high time for Malaysian manufacturers to venture and explore the full potential of local biomass-based products to increase their global competitiveness. In this regard, awareness on the industry is pivotal.

The conference will be able to provide an invaluable knowledge on the latest industry s developments, policies and deployment of technologies to enable businesses to strategically plan their entry in this sector, he added.

Sharing the sentiment is AIM s Chief Executive Officer Mark Rozario, who also said that the conference is part of the National Biomass Strategy (NBS) 2020, which aims to develop Malaysia into a regional champion in the biomass industry, particularly in the Downstream Biomass Processing.

NBS 2020 shows that Malaysia could potentially create a diverse downstream portfolio of biomass ventures. From a national standpoint, advancing towards the biomass-based industry would strengthen Malaysia s fundamentals and increase the country s economic resiliency, he said.

BIOMASS PROCESSING HUB

He stressed that East Malaysia has tremendous potential simply because it accounts for more than 50 per cent of the country s total oil palm planted area, citing 2014 figures from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board.

There is also a huge opportunity in Sabah and Sarawak and we envision these states to be the region s premier Downstream Biomass Processing hub, he said.

Rozario added, to build a strong and sustainable biomass industry, all elements of innovation must be intact.

Innovation in this respect goes beyond just technology advancement. "

"There must be a focus on the processes, smart partnerships, innovative business models and even innovative financing structures for biomass-based projects. In essence, innovation has to exist, end-to-end, in the entire biomass value chain.

The biomass industries can provide opportunities for the rural population, elevating their standard of living in a sustainable manner and to promote equal distribution of wealth too, Rozario noted.

IBCM 2015 will feature 27 speakers and six panel discussions from leading local and international biomass stakeholders. Topics to be highlighted include Is Biomass Industry A Threat To Environmental Sustainability, Can Malaysia Be The Regional Biomass- Based Processing Hub, Gearing Towards An Advanced Bioeconomy, Is It Worth The Risk, Accelerating Commercialisation Of Biomass Research and Incentives and Funding - Ways in Achieving Bankable Biomass Projects.

The conference is by invitation only. Companies interested to participate in the conference are encouraged to contact Abdul Rashid Mohd Zain at 03-6207 7258/ email rashid@matrade.gov.my or Siti Nordiana Mohd Akhir at 03-6207 7206/ email nordiana@matrade.gov.my. Closing date is Nov 20.
