19/08/2015 (Bernama) - The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) will continue to promote local products and services abroad despite uncertainty in the global market.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Dzulkifli Mahmud said besides continuing its promotional activities, Matrade would also support measures undertaken by the government to combat the current situation.

"I am confident our government will undertake comprehensive measures to ensure that the country's economy remain strong," he told reporters at the Third Country Training Programme (TCTP), "Trade Promotion for African Countries" here today.

The Prime Minister's Office, in a statement yesterday, said that the government would take a proactive role in managing the economy following the challenges posed by the current global and domestic economic conditions.

It said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also Finance Minister, would engage corporate leaders and seek their views on the current economic situation.

On the same note, Dzulkifli called on Malaysian companies to diversify their markets to mitigate the impact of the weakening ringgit.

The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar at 4.11 today.

On the TCTP, Dzulkifli said besides sharing trade experience and know-how, the programme was set to strengthen trade relations between Malaysia and participating countries from Africa.

The TCTP provides knowledge-sharing sessions by Matrade officials, a study visit to trade-related Malaysian agencies, networking sessions with Malaysian exporters, and factory visits.

In the first half of 2015, Malaysia's total trade with African countries stood at RM14.33 billion, of which exports amounted to RM9.38 billion and imports amounted to RM4.95 billion.

Among the main exports to Africa are palm oil, petroleum products, processed food, and chemicals and chemical products.
