Indonesia to host 2nd forum on sustainable palm oi

Medan, N Sumatra, May 5 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will host the second forumon sustainable palm oil scheduled for early September, one of itsorganizers said on Wednesday.

Speaking to the press, chairman of the Indonesian Palm Oil PlantationCompanies Association (Gapki) Derom Bangun said about 100 participantsconsisting of representatives from government agencies, businessassociations and palm oil plantation companies as well as environmentalactivists from several countries will take part in the forum.

"The forum will be the only neutral forum to accommodate aspirations fromparties interested in expanding palm oil plantations in a sustainableway," he said.

The forum will focus on efforts to develop palm oil plantations withoutdestroying the environment, including setting fire to forest to make wayfor the development of palm oil plantations, he said.

The destruction of tropical forest has come under the spotlight from themedia in the past few years, he said adding Gapki called on all sides,palm oil plantation companies in particular to keep abreast of thedevelopments and take part in every effort to strengthen domestic palm oilproducers' position in the international forum.

The forum on sustainable palm oil was last held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,in August 2003.
