08/12/2014 (Bernama) - Five non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have objected to a report by the United Sates (US) Department of Labor alleging child labor was used in the palm oil sector of the country and described it as inaccurate.

The five bodies - Ikatan Rakyat Insan Muslim Malaysia (IRIMM), Martabat Jalinan Muhibbah Malaysia (MJMM), Dewan Ekonomi dan Sosial Muslim Malaysia(DESMMA), Pertubuhan Ikatan Usahawan Kecil dan Sederhana (Ikhlas) and Lembaga Pembangunan dan Pengguna Malaysia (LPPM) - also demanded that the report be withdrawn and wanted the country to apologise to Malaysia.

Speaking on behalf of all the NGO's concerned, IRIMM president Amir Amsaa Alla Pithcay said the report gave a negative impact to the country's image and economy.

Prior to that, he had led a team from the respective NGOs to hand over the memorandum of objection to a representative from the US Embassy here Friday.

The US Department of Labour released a report on Dec 1 which placed Malaysia under the list of countries which practised child labour, with special reference to the palm oil sector.
