Cartoonist Lat, MPOB DG Among Six Recipients Of 2014 Merdeka Awards
05/09/2014 (Bernama) - Malaysia's famous cartoonist Datuk Mohammed Nor Khalid and Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) Director-General Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May were among six recipients of the prestigous Merdeka Awards this year.
The other four recipients were former Malaysian Wildlife and National Parks Department director-general Mohd Khan Momin Khan; Universiti Sains Malaysia, School of Chemical Engineering Lecturer Prof Dr Abdul Latif Ahmad, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Research for Materials and Manufacturing Research Alliance's Dean Prof Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail and Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, the fifth Earl of Cranbrook, United Kingdom.
Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak, who is the Merdeka Award Trust Royal Patron, announced the recipients during his opening remarks at awards ceremony held at the Malaysian Petroleum Club here today.
"The search, nomination and selection of Merdeka Awards recipients which began in January this year were extensive and rigorous and since it was established in 2007, 22 individuals and two organisations' achievements and contributions are recognised," he said.
Mohammed Nor or better known as Lat, 63, received the award in the education and community category for his outstanding contributions to the promotion and pluralism of Malaysia's cultural identity through the use of cartoons and for the promotion of understanding and respect among Malaysia's diverse ethnic communities.
Choo, 59, was recognised in the health, science and technology category for her contributions in the development of novel, efficient and green processes for the palm based industry through research and commercialisation of various technologies.
Mohd Khan, 79, was recognised for his contribution to wildlife research and conservation through the setting up of captive breeding centres as well as for pioneering and successfully managing the human-wildlife conflict in affected areas.
The outstanding sholastic achievement category was jointly awarded to Abdul Latif, 47, and Ahmad Fauzi, 48. Abdul Latif was honoured for his contributions in the field of polymer science, waste-water treatment and membrane separation technology.
Ahmad Fauzi was widely recognised for his contributions as a membrane scientist, technologist and inventor for gas separation and water and waste-water treatment.
Gathorne-Hardy, 81, is being recognised under the contributions to the people of Malaysia category for his pioneering research and conservation efforts relating to Malaysia's forest biodiversity and the ecology.
This category is open to non-Malaysians who have contributed significantly to the country and its citizens.
The recipients are awarded a Merdeka Award trophy, a Merdeka art work by local artist Latiff Mohidin and RM500,000 each.
The Merdeka Awards, which have been given annually since 2007, are conferred on outstanding individuals and organisations whose works have made an impact to Malaysia and its people.
As part of this year's Merdeka Awards signature initiatives, Sultan Nazrin Shah also announced the recipients of the Merdeka Award Grants for International Attachment, a short-term grant designed for qualified Malaysians between ages of 22 and 35 to engage in collaborative projects at selected, internationally-recognised host institutions.
They were Head of Physiology at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland-Perdana University in Malaysia Dr Kamalan Jeevaratnam and Dr Lim Hong Ngee, a senior lecturer at Universiti Putra Malaysia.
"The grant launched in 2012, creates the opportunity for recipients to establish contact and working relationships with other experts in their fields, share knowledge and upon their return, use these relationships and expertise to build on the body of work in his or her area of research," Sultan Nazrin Shah added.
