13/06/2014 (Bernama) - The shortage of cooking oil in the festive season should not be an issue as Malaysia is the world's largest exporter of palm oil, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Hence, he urged palm oil supplier industry to double its production besides monitoring the relevant agencies like the Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry.

"I think the situation will become more acute particularly during the forthcoming festive season due to increasing demands. What is important is how the industry players set the rate to ensure adequate supplies, especially for palm oil-based cooking oil.

"If there are increasing demands, then we can discuss either with Felda and other private companies that are the manufacturers. So we can determine the price and the Plantation Inudstry and Commodities Ministry will see to it," he told reporters after officiating the Jom Bertani programme in Kampung Nyior Tujuh near Jerteh here Thursday.

A media report, which quoted a consumers association, had claimed such shortages, including cooking oil and flour occurred in the Peninsular since the past two weeks
