05/02/2014 (Daily Express) - Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin recently paid a working visit to the Natural Biogas (BioNG) plant in Carey Island, Selangor.

The natural biogas energy plant using palm oil mill effluent (Pome), is the first project of its kind in the world, Sirim Berhad President and Chief and Chief Executive, Dr Zainal Abidin Mohd Yusof said in his welcoming speech.

Zainal pointed out that Malaysia's palm oil industry is one of the important industries of the nation and it is the fourth largest contributor to the national economy.

Biogas capture from natural resources such as palm oil mill effluent has many benefits that include additional revenues from sale of surplus energy and carbon credits.

In addition, it will also help to reduce global and local environmental impact, he said.

According to him other than enhancing revenue of palm oil mill in the country, this project will also boost technology innovation and R&D in Malaysia.

He added that other benefits from bio natural gas captured from POME include reducing dependence of fossil fuel, enhances fuel diversity and security of energy supply, as well as reducing carbon dioxide emission from the palm oil industry.

"Production of biogas from Pome will truly benefit the nation in the future as we face a rise in fuel prices due to global factors every year. I am sure we will be able to make Malaysia proud in producing alternative fuel for natural gas vehicles in the near future.

"This project has been developed by Sirim Renewable Energy Research Centre since 2009, and was completed in the middle of last year with a production capacity of 500Nm3 of Bio Natural Gas per day (equivalent to 500 litres of petrol per day)," he disclosed.

Meanwhile, plans are also in the way to utilise the composite CNG or Compressed Natural Gas tank, that has been developed using Sirim's "Filament Winding" technology to store the BioNG. The carbon fibre composite tank is lighter and much safer than ordinary tank, Zainal said.
