11/01/2014 (Bernama) - Sime Darby Plantation Sdn Bhd has achieved its first ever Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification for smallholders under its Indonesian subsidiary, PT Minamas Gemilang.

The plantation arm of Sime Darby Group said the achievement, which comes under the Kredit Koperasi Primer Anggota (KKPA - Members' Primary Credit Co-operative) scheme, was one year ahead of the mid-2014 target.

The certified KKPA scheme is located at the estates in Sebamban, South Kalimantan in Indonesia.

It covers a total operational area of 16,639 hectares (ha) with a total production capacity of 347,749 metric tonnes of fresh fruit bunches (FFB).

Following the achievement, the three Minamas Mills namely Mustika, Angsana Mini and Angsana Oil Mill, have now achieved segregated status under the RSPO Supply Chain Certification System, as 100 per cent of their supplies are now RSPO Certified FFB from Minamas' KKPA smallholders.

This has raised the number of Minamas' segregated status mills to 17 out of a total of 21 RSPO certified mills, said Sime Darby Plantation in a statement today.

Sime Darby Plantation Managing Director Datuk Franki Anthony Dass said the segregated status of its three mills would also provide traceability of its palm oil along the entire value chain.

It would also give the company the advantage of gaining further access to the international sustainable palm oil market, he said.

"This is yet another step forward for Sime Darby Plantation in our quest to produce and supply only certified sustainable palm oil and palm products.

"It will further strengthen our position as a leading certified sustainable palm oil producer in the world," he added.

Meanwhile, Minamas President Director Mohd Ghozali Yahya said the RSPO certification would have a positive impact on yield while improving efficiency as a result of the systematic management system.

"We are committed to ensure that our current remaining outgrower schemes that have not been RSPO certified will achieve their certification by 2020," he added.

Currently, there are two types of outgrower schemes under Minamas -- KKPA, a cooperative scheme and Plasma, an assistance programme.

To date, Minamas has developed some 42,008ha under the outgrower schemes in Indonesia which has improved the livelihood of more than 25,000 families.
