Initiative Spearheaded By Malaysia Help Empower OIC Member Nations - Hamzah
05/12/2013 (Bernama) - The Capacity Building Programme initiative spearheaded by Malaysia at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) level has helped several member nations like Bangladesh, Sierra Leone and Mauritania, said Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin.
He said it helped the three countries develop their oil palm, fisheries and petroleum sectors.
"In addition, Malaysia also heads research and development on pharmaceutical standards and production of suitable vaccines for use in OIC nations," he said.
Hamzah said this when replying to a question from Datuk Kamaruddin Jaffar (PAS-Tumpat) who has asked for updates on the proposal to make OIC play a bigger role in empowering the people in member nations, at the Dewan Rakyat here today.
He further clarified that Malaysia had introduced and headed several initiatives under the OIC Ten-Years Action Programme framework aimed at empowering more OIC countries in numerous fields.
"In terms of politics, Malaysia, as an Islamic country which is concerned about the welfare of Muslims, has proposed to the OIC to adopt moderation as a tool to overcome conflicts," he said.
Hamzah said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during a recent meeting with the OIC secretary-general had also suggested that the moderate approach be used as a medium to find solutions to the conflicts besetting Islamic nations currently.
"The Prime Minister's suggestion was well-received and supported by other heads of state," he said.
He said as a continuous effort to encourage economic growth among OIC nations, Malaysia had organised the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) which became a platform for discussion and networking for OIC nations to jointly empower their economies.
"The Ninth WIEF Forum recently in London had received support and very encouraging response from heads of nations, and the governments involved," he added.
