26/10/2013 (Bernama) - Production of palm oil, fishing and an American company's investment in lobster farming have resumed in Lahad Datu after the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) was established to strengthen land and maritime security in the eastern part of Sabah.

According to the Finance Ministry, in its 2013/2014 Economic Report released Friday, tourist arrivals have been on the increase while projects within the vicinity, such as construction of the Petronas LNG regasification terminal, have resumed.

Early this year, armed terrorists from neighbouring country intruded into Sabah, resulting in the death of 10 security personnel. The government set up ESSCOM on March 7 to prevent terrorist activities in the area as well as to ensure that trade and business activities were not affected.

"The intrusion disrupted economic activities, particularly palm oil production in Felda Sahabat, tourism in Pulau Sipadan and fishing activities in the waters of Sabah," it said.

A sum of RM200 million has been allocated to strengthen security in the area and as such the security threat in Lahad Datu has been successfully alleviated.

With the establishment of ESSCOM, the borders in the eastern region of Sabah will be well guarded and security restored, thus instilling confidence.

"These efforts will ensure that trade and business activities will continue to flourish and national sovereignty upheld," it said.

The government will not compromise on safety and security to ensure peaceful living for society and the nation, the report said.
