MPIC : PALM OIL, TIMBER AND RUBBER PROMOTION MISSION TO RUSSIA AND THE UNITED KINGDOM (16 - 19 SEPTEMBER 2013)

18/09/2013 (Bernama) - The Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, YB Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas will be leading a palm oil, timber and rubber promotion mission to Russia and The United Kingdom from 16 to 19 September 2013. The delegation comprises of representatives from the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), Malaysian Timber Council (MTC), Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) and the private sector.

The objective of this mission are:

• strengthen palm oil, timber products and rubber exports to Russia and The United Kingdom;

• promote business linkages between the private sector in Malaysia with their counterparts in Russia and The United Kingdom; and

• officiate and deliver Keynote Address at the Malaysia Russia Palm Oil Trade and Seminar (POTS Russia 2013) in Moscow.

During the visit to Russia from 16 - 17 September 2013, YB Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas will officiate and deliver a keynote address at POTS Russia. This event is organised by MPOB and MPOC aimed at promoting palm oil exports to Russia. This seminar is aimed at among others, disemination of information on the latest developments in the palm oil industry to manufactures and importers. POTS Russia is expected to be attended by 250 participants comprising mostly private sector representatives from Russia.

In addition, YB Minister will also schedule to attend bilateral meetings with the H.E. Fyodorov Nikolai, Minister of Agriculture and H.E. Denis Manturov, Minister of Industry and Trade. The discussion are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral trade in particular palm oil and other commodity products.

Bilateral trade with Russia in 2012 was valued at RM3.33 billion. Malaysia’s exports were valued at RM2.09 billion and imports at RM1.24 billion. Russia is Malaysia 35th largest trading partner globally in 2012. In the case of commodity products, palm oil was the major product exported to Russia in 2012 valued RM324.7 million. The value of palm oil exports to Russia in 2012 accounts for 11.4% of total exports from Malaysia. In addition to palm oil products, other commodity related products exported to Russia in 2012 include rubber and rubber products valued at RM217.90 million, cocoa and cocoa products valued at RM31.8 million and timber and timber products valued at RM134 million.

The mission will visit United Kingdom from 18 to 19 September 2013. The itinerary of the visits includes briefing on the timber market situation in Europe. The European Union is one Malaysia’s largest export destination for timber products valued at RM2.1 billion (10.4% of total global exports). Among the timber products, furniture exports recorded the highest value at RM855.3 million (40.7% of total timber products exports).

While in the United Kingdom, the delegation will visit Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre (TARRC) in Brickendonbury. TARRC was established in 1938 with the objective of undertaking research into rubber products and providing testing facilities for rubber products manufacturers in Europe. In addition, the delegation will be briefed on the outcomes of the trials on ekoprena tyres.

Bilateral trade with the United Kingdom in 2012 was recorded at RM13.64 billion. Exports were valued at RM6.81 billion and imports at RM6.83 billion. Among the commodity products, export of rubber products was valued at RM698.7 million, palm oil products at RM202.3 million, timber products at RM749.3 million, cocoa products at RM51 million and pepper products at RM1.64 million.
