13/09/2013 (Bernama) - KUB Malaysia Bhd's (KUB) subsidiary, KUB Agro Holdings Sdn Bhd, will further expand its operations in the plantation sector with the development of 7,284 hectares (ha) of oil palm plantation in Sabah and Sarawak by 2015.

KUB Agro Chief Executive Officer Dr Zainal Abideen Salleh said the plan is currently in the final stage and several areas have been identified for the development of the new oil palm plantation namely Mukah and Sibu in Sarawak and a few sites in Sabah.

"We have done a few memorandums of understanding with several companies to develop and take over the land especially in Sarawak.

"KUB Agro focuses on Sabah and Sarawak to expand its plantation hectarage as the landbank there are still abundant compared with the peninsula where the land are a bit limited, and if available they are quite expensive," he said.

However, Zainal declined to comment on the cost to develop the new oil palm plantations, saying an official announcement on this would be made soon.

He said this to reporters after a ceremony to hand over zakat by KUB Agrotech Group worth RM275,243 to the Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAIJ) at the Johor Menteri Besar's Office in Kota Iskandar, Nusajaya, Johor Baharu, Thursday.

The zakat was handed over by KUB Chairman Datuk Seri Abd Halim Abd Samad to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin who represented MAIJ.

Currently, KUB Agro Holdings has 4,047ha of oil palm plantation in Mukah and another 3,237ha in Kahang, Johor.

In line with this new development, Zainal said the company would build a palm oil refinery in Mukah costing RM45 million, which was expected to be operational in 2015.

The refinery will have a capacity to process 45 metric tonnes of fresh fruit bunches per hour.

"To further expand our business in this sector, we are also planning to venture into livestock breeding with a focus on livestock integration project to be carried out on oil palm plantation owned KUB Agro Holdings," he said.
