MPOB Holds 33rd Palm Oil Familiarisation Programme
03/09/2013 (Bernama) - The Malaysian Palm Oil Board is holding its 33rd Palm Oil Familiarisation Programme (POFB) beginning today for selected groups of 34 participants from 17 countries.
The programme's main objective is to familiarise the participants with the whole spectrum of the palm oil industry in Malaysia which covers development and progress in all major sectors of the industry.
"From being a decorative plant in the 1870s, palm oil today plays a significant role in providing nutritious food, being a source of raw materials for industries globally and also contributing to economic development in many countries," said Datuk Noriah Kasnon, Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities.
In her keynote address before officiating the programme, she said given the importance of the industry, it has been identified as a national key economic area under the Economic Transformation Programme to transform Malaysia into a high-income nation.
She said participants will see for themselves many facets of the Malaysian oil palm industry, including good agricultural and environmentally sound practices.
Meanwhile MPOB Director General Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May in her introductory remarks said the programme was designed by MPOB's Technical Advisory Services Unit, which is responsible for spearheading market development and technical promotion of Malaysian palm oil.
She added the week-long programme will enable experts from various sectors of the industry to share knowledge and expertise on specific subjects about palm oil.
"It also provides a platform for participants to interact with MPOB scientists and other experts for in-depth understanding about the oil palm dynamics and supply chain in Malaysia," she said.
So far, a total of 1,095 participants from 100 countries have attended this annual programme which is organised by MPOB with cooperation from the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
