Palm oil may replace Negros sugar industry

29/09/04 BACOLOD CITY - Instead of depending solely on the sugarindustry, Negrenses are expected to switch to palm oil production.

However, the realization of this vision will depend on the outcome of apalm oil mill project in Bohol.

Bobby Montelibano, chairman of the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce andIndustry (MBCCI), said he will attend the launching of the palm oil millproject. He said he expects to meet foreign investors whom he can inviteto visit Negros Occidental to find out if the area is suitable for palmproduction.

The southern areas of the province, particularly Hinobaan, Cauayan andSipalay City, are identified as prospects for the palm oil industry.

Board Member Quito Montilla, who has palm plantations in Mindanao, couldhelp in the exploration of the province for palm oil production,Montelibano said.

There were groups of Malaysian investors who have teamed up with theprovincial government of Bohol in the establishment of of palm oil millsin the country.
