02/07/2013 (Bernama) - The Honourable Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas, Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Malaysia officiated the First Malaysia-Vietnam Palm Oil Trade Fair and Seminar 2013 (POTS) at New World Hotel today. Themed Sharing Solutions, Shaping the Visions, this event provides insights, solutions and trend analysis on the economic opportunities in the palm oil trade.

POTS Vietnam is the second event hosted in 2013. Since inception of the POTS series in 2006, this event has been held annually in major importing countries. The objectives of POTS are to disseminate information on the nutritional and health benefits of palm oil. Speakers at POTS Vietnam include renowned local industry captains and international experts from Malaysia, UK and Germany. The papers cover topics on oils and fats ranging from market situation and trade to nutrition and the price outlook. The event attracted over 200 participants from both Malaysia and Vietnam.

Import of Malaysian palm oil into Vietnam was recorded at 469,000 tonnes in 2012, an increase of 11.7% in volume compared to 2011. From January to April this year, Malaysian palm oil exports to Vietnam were about 147,000 tonnes, an increase of 64% compared to the same period of 2012.

Commenting on the palm oil import trends, the Hon. Dato’ Sri Douglas Uggah Embas expressed optimism on the growth potential in the future, in line with the economic growth and improved living standards in Vietnam. He encouraged Malaysian and Vietnamese oils and fats players to embark on collaborative initiatives to further enhance trade relationships in the commodity, in order to meet the increasingly sophisticated demands of Vietnamese consumers.

Malaysia-Vietnam POTS is the 30th of its series since its introduction in 2006. This event is organised in Vietnam for the first time to address the oils and fats trade. Malaysia-Vietnam POTS 2013 is organised jointly by Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) and Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), with the support from Golden Hope Nha Be and Cai Lan Oils & Fats Industries Co Ltd.

This event provides a platform for industry players from different streams of activities within the commodity sector to have meaningful discussions on issues and challenges facing the palm oil industry today.
