27/06/2013 (Bernama) - The Sarawak Oil Palm Plantation Owners Association (SOPPOA) is on the watch out for any open burning near its estates that are likely to pose real dangers to the oil palms, mills and workers in view of the current dry spell and haze recurrence, says Chairman Paul Won.

In supporting every effort to ensure the haze situation in the state does not get worse, he reminded members to observe the "no open burning" regulation without permit from the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB).

"It is not within our good agricultural practices to hold open burning, which actually possess a real danger to estates.

"Under the guidelines of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board we are not allowed to perform any open burning in estates or plantations without permit," he said in a statement.

Won, however, said individuals who carried out open burning outside of estates and plantations were beyond the control of estate operators.

While saying that plantations generally adhered to the "no burning without a permit policy", he added that SOPPOA would not defend any member caught for open burning as they should be subjected to the extent of the law.

As responsible corporate organisations, he said estates and plantations, where millions of ringgit had been invested, did not want to run foul with the state authorities on issues that could be subjected to fines and damage to reputation.
