27/05/2013 (The Star) - Nearly 300 guests attended a special evening forum whereby the menu was not just good Chinese cuisine, but a solid diet of three lectures delivered by experts in the field of palm oil nutrition.

The event was organised by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) in conjunction with the Palm Oil Nutrition Week 2013 held at the One World Hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The speakers were Prof Chandan Sen, Dr Bryce Wylde, both from the United States, while Dr Kalyana Sundram is a Malaysian with 30 years’ of experience researching the properties of palm oil.

The Nutrition Week kicked off with the Health and Nutrition Roadshow last weekend (May 18-19) at the 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Selangor, followed by two back-to-back conferences: the 3rd Palm International Nutra-Cosmeceutical Conference (PINC 2013), as well as the Dietary Palm Oil in Human Nutrition (NUTRICON 2013) Conference.

Tuesday’s evening lecture was targeted at medical professionals in order to expose them to the potential of tocotrienols, a form of vitamin E that is increasingly becoming closer to being scientifically validated as having a positive effect on degenerative diseases or conditions.

According to Tan Sri Yusof Basiron, CEO of MPOC, the Nutrition Week aspires to highlight the positive role of bioactives from palm oil, including tocotrienols, phenols, and carotenoids that are now found in many food and personal care products.

“The event is intended to facilitate information exchange and networking between those in the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical, and healthcare products sectors, as well as to disseminate the latest information on clinical trials involving bioactives from palm oil.”

Fit4life will carry a series of articles based on interviews with these experts over the next few months.
