11/05/2013 (Bernama) - The Biomass Asia Conference 2013, to be held here on May 21-22, hopes to address prevailing issues pertaining to the biomass sector, with a special focus on Asia.

Technical Advisor to The EU-Malaysia Biomass Sustainable Production Initiative (Biomass-SP), Datuk Leong Kin Mun, said the conference, which will unite industry professionals from the biomass value chain, will consist of 10 panel sessions with more than 40 experts from Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and Europe.

He noted that while many foreign players were interested to invest in the local biomass industry, their interests were capped by the challenge of securing feedstock supply.

"The government needs to come in to secure feedstock supply for the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as the investment for this is too big for these companies," he told a press conference on the event here today.

Leong said to create awareness of green funding for the SMEs, there would be a dedicated Pre-Conference Seminar on Green Technology Commercialisation and Financing on May 20, a prelude to the conference.

The pre-conference would bring together top level representatives from Malaysia Debt Ventures, Exim Bank and Maybank, as well as foreign funders such as Mizuho Asia Partners, Keppel Infrastructure Fund Management and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp.

"Last year was the best year for the industry because there were a lot of government initiatives to promote the industry through agencies like Malaysia Innovation Agency, Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology and Malaysian Palm Oil Board.

"The government has also provided a lot of support and framework to grow the industry," said Leong, who is also the Malaysia Biomass Industries Confederation (MBIC) President.

The event, which will be held at Sunway Putra Hotel Kuala Lumpur, is organised by Biomass-SP and MBIC.

The Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union is also scheduled to deliver a special address at the opening ceremony.
