Activity at Karachi and Qasim Ports

08/11/2012 (Business Recorder) - The Karachi Port handled 78,849 tonnes of cargo comprising 51,193 tonnes of import cargo and 27,656 tonnes of export cargo including 1,646 loaded & empty containers during the last 24 hours ended at 0700 hours on Wednesday.

The total import cargo of 51,193 tonnes comprised 7,934 tonnes of containerised cargo; 15 tonnes of general cargo; 40,474 tonnes of bulk cargo: 29,700 tonnes of coal; 1,270 tonnes of palm kernel expeller; 4,895 tonnes of DAP; 4,609 tonnes of rock phosphate and 2,770 tonnes of oil/liquid cargo. The total export cargo of 27,656 tonnes comprised 11,225 tonnes of containerised cargo; 532 tonnes of general cargo and 15,899 tonnes of oil/liquid cargo.

As many as 1,646 containers comprising 865 containers import and 781 containers export were handled during the last 24 hours on Wednesday. The brakeup of imported containers shows 265 of 20's and 131 of 40's loaded while 308 of 20's and 15 of 40's empty containers, whereas that of exported containers shows 301 of 20's and 186 of 40's loaded containers while 16 of 20's and 46 of 40's empty containers were handled during the business hours.

Three ships namely Taban-1, Hanjin Durban and Maritime Venessa with two container ships and one oil tanker respectively sailed out to sea during the reported period. Five vessels viz Kota Anggerik, R Sea, Ital Moderna, UASC Shuwaikh and Chemroute Pegasus with four container ships and one oil tanker respectively are currently at the berths.

Three ships namely UASC Shuwaikh, Mandarin River and Chang Hang Guang Rong with one container ship, one coal carrier and one naphtha tanker respectively sailed out to sea on Wednesday, while three ships namely R Sea, Ital Moderna and Chemroute Pegasus carrying two container ships and one oil tanker respectively are expected to sail on Thursday.

Four vessels viz Rio Bravo, APL Sharjah, Oriental Acacia and Royal Diamond-7 with two container ships, one ethanol ship and one chemical carrier respectively are due to arrive on Thursday, while four vessels viz Emirates, YM North, Andromeda and New Horizon with two container ships, one coal carrier and one copra carrier respectively are due to arrive on Friday.

PORT QASIM
A cargo volume of 118,850 tonnes comprising 79,762 tonnes of import cargo and 39,088 tonnes of export cargo inclusive 3,750 loaded & empty containers (TEUs) was handled at Port Qasim during the last 24 hours on Wednesday.

The total import cargo of 79,762 tonnes includes 943 tonnes of soya seed meal; 17,041 tonnes of palm oil; 13,598 tonnes of coal; 3,553 tonnes of steel scrap; 3,752 tonnes of chemicals; 25 tonnes of general cargo and 40,850 tonnes of containerised cargo. The total export cargo of 39,088 tonnes includes 6,327 tonnes of cement; 2,361 tonnes of wheat and 30,400 tonnes of containerised cargo. A total number of 3,750 containers comprising 2,150 containers import and 1,600 containers export were handled during the last 24 hours on Wednesday.

Two ships namely MV Dia Duong Sunrise and MV Victoria Star with soyabean and project cargo respectively sailed out to sea on Wednesday morning, while four more ships namely CV Maersk Kingston, CV Nedlloyd Hodson, CV Abu Dhabi and MT Chemroad Sea with containers and edible oil are expected to sail on the same day afternoon.

A total number of thirteen vessels viz CV Maersk Kingston, CV Nedlloyd Hodson, CV Abu Dhabi, Phutia-19, Beagle-III, DN Vatan, MV Victoria Star, MV Dia Duong Sunrise, Maha Deepa, MT Chemroad Sea, Clipper Hermes, MV Double Prosperity and KPS Alican Bey are currently occupying berths to load/offload containers, rice, wheat, cement, general crgo, coal, project cargo, cement, steel scrap, soyabean and edible oil respectively during the last 24 hours.

No ships are currently at the outer anchorage of Port Qasim. A container vessel viz CV CMA CGM Strauss is expected to take berth at Qasim International Containers Terminal on Wednesday. One ship namely MV Leopard-B with cement is due to arrive on Wednesday, while three more ships namely CV New Delhi Express, CV Hansa Liberty and MV Cos Glory with containers and canola seeds are due to arrive on Thursday.
